A 52-year-old Ontario woman has been charged with driving under the influence after her 9-year-old son managed to call 911 while in the vehicle with her.

York Regional Police received a call on Wednesday, November 11, 2015, around 4:30pm from a mobile phone. No contact was made with the caller; however, when the dispatcher phoned back, they spoke with a young boy, stating that he was in a van with his mother who was drinking and driving. Soon after, the mother got on the phone and denied this statement, saying that she only had one drink.

Drunk Driving

The woman was pulled over north of Toronto, in a town called Newmarket. She was later taken to police headquarters where she received a breath test, blowing more than twice the legal limit.

“The boy is a hero, that’s for sure.” – Const. Andy Pattenden

“It’s an unbelievable situation where he has the wherewithal to make that call to 911 and stop basically an emergency or a crime in process even though it’s his mother.”

Const. Pattenden hopes that this story is a positive sign of the future generation. He states that since a 9-year-old gets the message, maybe there is hope that the number of impaired drivers will decrease and hopefully better choices will be made.
